Lake Mac's Sandy Beaches

Windlass Hill Ruts, Ash Hollow

Cabela's Store, Sidney, Nebraska

The close proximity to Lake McConaughey and other scenic places makes our area an ideal stopping place for relaxation and recreation. Nearby you will find the historic Oregon Trail and picturesque Ash Hollow at Lewellen. Visit the site where the weary pioneers winched their wagon down steep cliffs and rested in this beautiful cedar covered area near the North Platte river before continuing on their way west to their final destinations.

Twenty miles to the east in Ogallala, you will be able to visit a recreated western town, "Front Street", open year round featuring a great restaurant plus an interesting museum depicting the old wild west end of the Texas Trail. In the summer there is a nightly floor show featuring a hilarious cast of western characters with a real "shoot out" preceding the show. A petrified wood gallery and western store are also found at Front Street. A beautifully restored home, the "Mansion on the Hill" is another interesting place to stop on Highway 91. Just north of the mansion you will find a restored country school house and also the famous early day cemetery, "Boot Hill."

A trip to Lake McConaghy is a "must" on your agenda. Stop and visit the Water Interpretive Center where you will be able to see the complete story of the Ogallala Acquifier and its impact on irrigation in our state. If you are visiting in the winter months you will be able to visit the eagle viewing site at Lake Ogallala below the dam.

Last but not least is a visit to Cabela's Store in Sidney, Nebraska. Few, if any, businesses today survive the kitchen-table dreams of their founders, especially in the outdoor industry where businesses come and go with the changing seasons. Yet, the leader in the outdoor equipment business has done just that - survived, grown and prospered from simple beginnings to become the largest mail-order, retail and Internet outdoor outfitter in the world.
